Australian Air Force Cadets Part 2

by Steve Mackenzie

History

Last issue we looked at the DG40 trainer aircraft used by the Air Cadets. This issue I am covering the types used previously by them. Over the years they have operated a large variety of airframes, there is a complete rundown of both powered and glider types on the ADF Serials website at 'http://www.adf-serials.com.au/atc.htm'. The major powered type used previously for training was the Piper PA-38 Tomahawk, nine of them (others were mostly used in single numbers, note the Pawnee PA-25s listed are Glider Tugs, a fair number of those are in use, I will come to them another issue).

The PA-38s were mainly used in an Orange/White scheme as per the image of VH-FTI at the top of the page. However VH-JAM and VH-FTI pictured on this page were in a very snazzy Dark Blue/Yellow scheme at one stage (VH-TLA and VH-UAL also operated by No. 2 Wing AAFC School of Aviation at the same time were likely also in this scheme).

Another PA-38 Tomahawk was this one VH-HAW, note how the Kangaroo in the roundel has a 'Joey' accompaning it (Photo:Craig Murray).

At time the Air Cadets also used airframes belonging to commercial flying schools. Piper PA-28 Warrior II airframes are being used here. VH-INH and VH-HTK are based at Bankstown where I believe these images were taken.

In addition to the page on the ADF Serials website that I give a link to in Paragraph one, there is a lot more info in a post on the ADF Serials Message Board at 'http://www.adf-messageboard.com.au/invboard/index.php?showtopic=2199' with more photos.
